One layer, top to bottom

Homogeneous vinyl is made of a single layer, the same material from the surface all the way down. If the surface wears, the same colour and material are underneath.

The alternative has two layers

Heterogeneous vinyl has a thin top layer over a second layer beneath. When the top wears through, what is underneath shows. That is why hospitals ask for homogeneous.
